According to local legends, Raja Bhoj suffered from a severe skin disease that couldn’t be cured by any healer. Then, a saint advised him to build a reservoir by connecting 365 tributaries and bathe in it to find healing. Following this advice, the king gathered his engineers, and with the help of Gond Commander Kalia—who guided them to a hidden river to complete the count of 365 tributaries—the lake was constructed. This massive water body became known as Bada Talaab, with the secret river named Kaliasot, marking the creation of Upper Lake.

Covering an area of 36.1 square kilometers, Upper Lake is a vital source of drinking water for Bhopal, supplying around 30 million gallons daily to the city’s residents. To manage its water outflow, the Bhadbhada Dam, with eleven gates, was built at the lake’s southeast corner in 1965.

This dam regulates the water flow into the Kaliasote River. Together with the nearby Chhota Talaab, meaning “small lake,” Upper Lake forms the Bhoj Wetland, which has earned recognition as a Ramsar site for its ecological significance. An overbridge called Pul Pukhta separates the Upper Lake from the Lower Lake.
