History of Murud Janjira Fort
Long ago, the fort was made by the Siddis, and then the Marathas made some changes to it. It was like a whole city inside the fort, with lakes, offices, palaces, and temples. When there were fights, people used the roof of the fort to keep watch. Nowadays, the roof gives an amazing view of the clear blue water of the Arabian Sea and the golden sand of Murud Beach.
In the year 1736, there was a big fight between the Siddis of Murud-Janjira and the forces of Peshwa Baji Rao. The Maratha warriors, Nanaji Surve and Chimaji Appa, attacked the Siddis near Rewas. The fight lasted for a while, and when it was over, many Siddis, including their leader Siddi Sat, were killed. In September 1736, they made peace, but the Siddis were only allowed to stay in Janjira, Gowalkot, and Anjanwel, and they were not as powerful as before. However, Janjira remained unconquered until it became part of India after the British left in 1947.
Inside the Murud-Janjira Fort, there used to be around 572 cannons that were used in battles. Nowadays, only a few cannons are left, but they are very famous among people who visit the fort. Besides the cannons, the fort has some beautiful tombs, water tanks, and a few stone sculptures. The entrance gate of the fort is called “Sher Darwaza” which means Tiger’s Door. It has a small sculpture of six elephants and a tiger, and it is a very popular gate among visitors.
